This new stomach receives less nutrients and therefore aims to make the patient eat less food and create a high calorie deficit, allowing the person to lose weight quickly.
How is this surgical procedure performed?
It is usually performed laparoscopically, i.e. through a small incision and using special instruments. During the procedure, approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed and the remaining part is converted into a tubular structure.
Who is suitable for sleeve gastrectomy?
Sleeve gastrectomy is recommended for patients with a body mass index of 40 or above, or for patients with a BMI in the range of 35-40 but who have other health problems associated with obesity. These health problems include many diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, heart disease.
